Earth Day Celebration 2022! “Becoming a Steward of Your Local Environment - an Introduction”

In celebration of Earth Day,

Friends of Herrontown Woods and Princeton Public Library invite you to join us for a day of exploring and learning in nature.

April 24th, 9AM-3PM, at Herrontown Woods

Schedule of events for families, children and adults:

9 to 10 AM | 11 AM to 12 PM - Flowers and Frogs Family Hike, with local botanists Stephen Hiltner and Fairfax Hutter. Hike is moderate, and boots recommended, children may want to wear galoshes. Sign up below.

9 AM to 3 PM - May’s Barden Café will be open for business serving Small World Coffee and baked treats for sale from 9AM to 12PM; from 12PM to 3PM May’s Café will serve samples of freshly brewed tea from Princeton’s new tea parlor and apothecary, Tipple & Rose. May’s Café will also be selling 4 oz. tins of “May’s Barden Café Blend chari-TEA” from Tipple and Rose with 50% of the proceeds going to FOHW!

10 AM to 3 PM - Visit local experts at hands-on display tables in the Botanical Art Garden (Barden) and near the Veblen House:

  • Explore Princeton Public Library’s books on pollinators and native wildflowers and make a butterfly bookmark too!

  • Learn to plant your own wildflower seeds with Mathilde Burlion of Pousse Petit Jardinier.

  • Bring home a potted native plant for your yard.

  • Bike Tune-ups and Repairs in the Barden with Forrest Meggers!

  • Adults can make and bring home their own herbal vinegar with Tish Streetan of Queen Mab’s Herbs using local plants and herbs.

  • Local mushroom forager,” Dr. Philip Poniz will talk about mushrooms in this region.

  • Arts and crafts! Make a "nature mandala” or join the Littlebrook School PTO in decorating a reusable grocery bag and take home some “eco-friendly” samples.

  • Get expert advice on tips for photographing nature.

  • Learn about local invasive species from local experts, and perhaps join the newly formed, relaxed and friendly "Invasive Species of the Month Club!"

  • And more fun activities….

1 to 3 PM - Geology Walk with Professor Emeritus Lincoln Hollister of Princeton University Geosciences Department, discussing the formation of the Princeton Ridge and its special rocks. This event had limited capacity and is now full.

For all walks and hikes: Please wear sturdy shoes/boots. The trails will be muddy in spots. We will meet at the main parking lot at the end of Snowden Lane, by the kiosk. (Drivers, we encourage you to park at Smoyer Park and walk down [map].)
