Grow Little Gardener

Grow Little Gardener is pleased to offer children’s gardening classes at May’s Garden in Herrontown Woods for pre-K and early elementary-aged kids. In these sessions Mathilde Burlion, trained engineer, Master Gardener and local mom, will lead kids and their caregivers in the art of gardening. Prepare to practice, play, and discover. Parents must accompany children.

Cost: $130.00/child

What to expect: Every session will involve tending the vegetable garden at the Veblen House. Kids will participate in guided nature walks and explore nature in the Herrontown Woods. Fun outdoor games and art activities will also be part of the garden club! Children will practice planting and caring for crops; they will learn about the soil, plant seeds, and identify insects; to recognize common ground covers, shrubs, and trees found in the woods; learn how to identify and protect oneself from ticks, poison ivy, etc.; and engage in water play (expect muddy boots).

Fees
$130 per participating child for 6 classes
$25 for drop-ins

Plants, seeds, and tools will be provided for use on-site.
All fees go towards the materials and the support of Herrontown Woods.

Classes meet on the lawn next to the Veblen House in Herrontown Woods. Please park in the upper parking lot in Herrontown Woods off of Herrontown Road here. (GPS use the following address: 452 Herrontown Rd, Princeton, NJ 08540)

  1. Where does the class take place, and where should I park?
    The class will be at May’s Garden behind the Veblen house. You can park by the Veblen House or at the Herrontown Woods main parking lot and take the boardwalk trail.

  2. As a parent, do I have to stay during the class?
    Yes, please hang out with us.

  3. My child is not yet 4, or they are over 8 years old, but I think it would be great for them. Can I sign them up?
    Yes, but reach out to me first at Mathilde.burlion@gmail.com

  4. Can I sign up my child for a single class?
    Yes, if there is a spot available. The cost is $25.

  5. How big is the group?
    The group will be limited to 10 kids.

  6. What clothes or equipment do the kids need?
    Long sleeves and light colors are ideal for spotting ticks, if any. Preferably old clothes ready for adventure. Kids may wear bug repellent and sunscreen. They need to bring a water bottle

  7. Do we need to bring any gardening supplies?
    NO, all the tools and materials will be provided.

  8. Is there a rain date, in case of bad weather?
    Yes, the following Sunday at 4:00 PM.
